Browse on Files and Folders

You use this program to browse on files and folders. This program is especially useful for browsing on files and folders which reside on a server, as it is not operating system dependent.

Although the program is typically used in a client/server environment, it can also used in a mapped drive environment.

Browse on Files and Folders

The following information is displayed when viewing the files/folders as a detailed list:

Column Description
Name This indicates the name of the file or folder.
Size This indicates the size of the file.
Type This indicates the file type.
Date Modified This indicates the date and time the file was last modified

The following options are available when you highlight a file or folder and use your right mouse button:

Field Description
Select Select this to select the highlighted file and return it to the calling program.
View as Text Select this to load the highlighted file into a simple text viewer (see Text Viewer Editor).

Selecting this option for some file types such as images or executable files is meaningless as these files contain special (non-text) characters.

Edit Select this to use a simple text editor to make changes to the file. This file could reside on the server or the client machine.

This option is only enabled for file types that the file browser interprets as a known text file format. Refer to Editing for a list of these file formats.

When you select this option, the file is loaded into a simple text editor (see Text Viewer Editor). This enables you to view the file and optionally save any changes made.

Copy Select this to copy the highlighted file (see Copy).
Delete Select this to delete the highlighted file. You will be requested to confirm the deletion of the file.
Rename Select this to rename the currently highlighted file or folder (see Rename).

Open

This screen is displayed when you select to Open a file or folder.

Back Select this to navigate to the previous screen.
Up One Level Select this to navigate to the previous folder or drive.
Toggle Views You use this option to toggle between the options for displaying the files and folders. These options include displaying the files/folders as:
  • icons
  • a list of names
  • a detailed list
Look in Select the drive in which to browse for files/folders.
File name This indicates the name of the file which is currently highlighted.
Files of type This indicates the types of files currently being displayed.
Open Select this to open the currently highlighted file/folder.
Cancel Select this to return to the previous screen.

Save As

This screen is displayed when you select to Save a file.

Up One Level Select this to navigate to the previous folder or drive.

Save in Select the drive or folder in which to save the file.
File name Enter the name of the file you want to save.
Files of type This indicates the type of file currently being saved.
Save Select this to save file.
Cancel Select this to return to the previous screen.

Select File

This screen is displayed when you select to Browse on files.

Select Folder

This screen is displayed when you select to Browse on folders.

Up One Level Select this to navigate to the previous folder or drive.
Toggle Views You use this option to toggle between the options for displaying the folders. These options include displaying the files/folders as:
  • icons
  • a list of names
  • a detailed list
Look in Select the drive in which to browse for folders.
Folder name This indicates the name of the folder which is currently highlighted.
OK Select this to open the currently highlighted folder.
Cancel Select this to return to the previous screen.

Restrictions and limits

  • Only the first 3000 matching files per folder are displayed.
  • Only the first 200 sub-folders for the current folder are displayed.
  • No attempt is made to display the icon associated with each file displayed
  • The Look in selection box displays more basic information (without icons) than the standard Windows Look in selection box.
  • The context sensitive Right click to Copy, Delete, Rename, edit Properties, etc., may be disabled.

Activity considerations

Operator access to the following activities within this program can be restricted. You configure this using the Operators program.

Activity Description
File Browse on server (C/S system) Controls whether an operator use the browse function to load the Browse on Files and Folders program to locate files on the server in a client/server environment. Operators can still navigate to a file or folder on the server by typing in the full path name in the entry field.
File Browse - Allow right-click over files Controls whether an operator can access the functions displayed when typically using the right mouse button in the Browse on Files and Folders program.
